Health Policy, Economics and Health Services Research
Dr. Donald Kenkel's expertise
is in the areas of health economics and public sector economics. Much of
his research is on the economics of consumer health behavior, including
both medical care purchases (Review of Economics and Statistics 1990) and
health promotion and disease prevention choices made outside of the medical
care sector (Journal of Political Economy 1991). For the past five years
he has conducted a series of studies on economics aspects of alcohol policies,
for example taxing alcohol to prevent alcohol problems (Journal of Law
and Economics 1993, Journal of Health Economics 1993, Brookings Papers
on Economic Activity: Microeconomics, 1994, Economic Inquiry 1996, Journal
of Studies on Alcohol 1997). Another area of research and teaching interest
is in cost-benefit analysis of public policies, especially policies that
affect health (University of Chicago Press edited volume, 1994).
Dr. Kenkel is a Co-Principal Investigator
with Professor Alan Mathios on a research project titled An Economic
Analysis of High School Students and Dropout Smoking, funded by the
National Cancer Institute. He is also a Co-Principal Investigator with
Professor Ping Wang of Vanderbilt University on a research project titled
Are
Alcoholics in Bad Jobs? funded by the National Institute on Alcohol
Abuse and Alcoholism. He is completing a chapter on Prevention for the
Handbook of Health Economics edited by Joseph Newhouse and Anthony Culyer
(forthcoming from North-Holland).
